One of Nova Scotia's finest choirs, the Aeolian Singers have celebrated over 30 years of music making, and are under the direction of Jacqueline Chambers, and accompanied by Canadian pianist Barbara Pritchard. They released their first CD, In A Woman's Life in 2003, and provide a voice for women through high quality choral music programs. Champions of Canadian and new music, the Aeolians have commissioned many new works by both Atlantic and Canadian composers over the years, and have been broadcast regionally and nationally on CBC Radio. For several years the choir has presented concerts in celebration of International Women's Day and raised funds for and awareness of groups from women and girls in Afghanistan to local charities benefiting women.

The performance will feature new songs written for the choir by Canadian singer/songwriters Connie Kaldor, Susan Crowe, Raylene Rankin and Gwen Swick, and celebrates women's lives in a creative and engaging program of great music. Commented Jackie Chambers, the Aeolians' Artistic Director: "We are really thrilled to be presenting these beautiful new songs written for us by some of Canada's greatest singer/songwriters. And having Connie as a guest will be wonderful as we have had several of her songs in our repertoire for a few years. This promises to be a moving and joyous event for Halifax audiences." Juno-nominee Donna Rhodenizer, Gwen Swick, Scott Macmillan and Chris Palmer have arranged this new repertoire for the Aeolians

Here's a sample of one of the many beautiful new songs the Aeolians will be presenting (excerpt from To Make This Thing of Beauty by Connie Kaldor and Susan Crowe):

This quilt was made each stitch by hand with squares of coloured cotton,
You make the best of what you've got and throw away what's rotten.
Day by day, and piece by piece, bits of joy and duty,
Many hands to sew it up to make this thing of beauty.

Songwriting, a Labour of Love?

Visitors to Sherbrooke Village Museum will be able to learn more about writing songs and enjoy an evening of music at an event called Songwriting, a Labour of Love? on Monday, September 4, at 7:30 p.m.

The songwriters' circle will kick off the Monday concert series and be led by two-time Juno nominee Susan Crowe. Ms. Crowe has received the Music Nova Scotia Female Artist of the Year award and is a 2005 ECMA nominee. Called "a writer's writer," Ms. Crowe is one of Canada's foremost songwriters with four CDs released to date.

Other artists include 2006 ECMA nominees Meaghan Smith of Halifax and Jason MacDonald of Glace Bay. Guysborough County artists Steve Wright and Alanna Hayne will also perform. Mr. Wright performed at the 2006 Stan Rogers Folk Festival and Ms. Hayne's song Highway to Glory was the title song for the most recent Stanfest gospel show.

Sherbrooke Village's George Brothers, who will also perform some of his own work, will host the event.

"We felt that Sherbrooke was an ideal place to host such an event, not only because of the great acoustics of the courthouse, but because of the songwriting connections we have made over the years, largely through partnerships with the Stan Rogers Folk Festival," said Mr. Brothers.

"Through those Stanfest connections we have been able to bring in great writers such as Valdy, JP Cormier, Ron Hynes, Lennie Gallant, Terry Kelly, John Gracie, and Dave Gunning. We've had some great songwriting events here in the past; this year's event promises to continue that great tradition."

Topics for discussion include: how songs are written, the process of writing, is writing a labour of love? and, is songwriting a gift, a craft, or both?

In addition to performing their own material, each writer will be encouraged to share a song by a writer whose work they admire.

Admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the St. Mary's Food Bank. For more information, please call Sherbrooke Village at 1-888-743-7845 or visit the website, www.sherbrookenow.ca.

Susan Crowe In Concert April 30th at Neptune's Studio Theatre

(Halifax,NS) Singer-songwriter, Susan Crowe will perform in concert at Neptune’s Studio Theatre, on Friday April 30th at 8pm, in celebration of her latest JUNO and ECMA nominated cd, Book Of Days. Crowe will be joined on stage by world renowned mandolin player, John Reischman and premiere Canadian vocalist Cindy Church, both of whom appear on her Book Of Days cd. The concert line up also features a stellar group of backing musicians including: Jamie Robinson (guitar), Don Chapman (drums), Ed Woodsworth (bass) and Kim Dunn (piano). The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on CBC Radio’s regional program, Atlantic Airwaves.

Often described as a “writer’s writer”, Susan Crowe has emerged as one of Canada’s most respected singer-songwriters in the folk genre, a label that barely scratches the surface of her compelling and polished approach to music. At once complex, challenging and accessible, Susan’s intelligent and moving songs have captivated audiences and reviewers from coast to coast, continent to continent. She possesses, in the words of Britain’s Folk Roots magazine, “that rare ability of crafting a lyric that bears scrutiny on its own terms.”

That rare ability has earned her two Juno nominations, nominations from both the West Coast and East Coast Music Awards, repeat performances at all of Canada’s major folk festivals, and an invitation to the prestigious Kerrville Songwriter’s Festival in 2000. Her finely crafted songs have earned her placement on several compilations, including the Kerrville 2000 CD.

With four full cds to her credit, This Far From Home (Corvus/Festival), The Door To The River (Corvus/Festival), A Pilgrim’s Mirror (Corvus/Festival) and now Book of Days (Corvus/Festival), Susan Crowe has attracted an ever-growing legion of followers who appreciate an artist who steps well beyond folk clichés and predictable melodies. As reported by The Vancouver Sun, “With one of the most distinctive voices in Canada today, she is destined to become one of our lasting folk heroines.”

John Reischman, recognized as one of the acoustic music world’s top-ranked mandolin players and composers, is renowned for his exquisite taste, tone and impeccable musicianship. His mastery of the instrument is showcased in the powerful Juno nominated bluegrass band John Reischman and the Jaybirds, and his Latin/jazz instrumental duo with highly-regarded acoustic guitar stylist John Miller. Through the years Reischman’s distinctive signature has graced a long list of impressive recordings by other top artists including bassist Todd Phillips’ 1996 Grammy winner True Life Blues: The Music of Bill Monroe and Kate MacKenzie’s Grammy-nominated The Age of Innocence. His long time collaboration with Susan Crowe, includes her Juno-nominated albums This Far From Home and Book Of Days.

Cindy Church has made a powerful impact as a vocalist, songwriter and recording artist in both country and folk music scenes in Canada. Originally from Bible Hill, NS, Cindy is a member of well-known recording group, Quartette (Sylvia Tyson, Caitlin Hanford and Gwen Swick), Lunch at Allens (with Murray McLaughlin, Ian Thomas & Marc Jordan) and brava (with Susan Crowe and Laura Smith). Cindy has released three solo CD’s - Love On The Range, Just A Little Rain and the self-titled Cindy Church. Ian Tyson referred to Cindy as “just about the best song stylist around”. Along with contributing outstanding vocal harmonies, Cindy Church co-wrote the song, Autumn Leaves Are Blue, with Susan Crowe for Book Of Days.
